2014 Summer Music & Opera Festivals in Europe

During this summer's music and opera festivals, travelers to Europe can delight in internationally renowned performing artists and world premieres in beautiful and historic settings. Opera in a Roman open air amphitheatre, classical concerts in Renaissance churches, or arias in grand opera houses and castles are just a few of the experiences in store for travelers and music lovers this spring and summer of 2014.


Arena di Verona Summer Opera Season
Verona, Italy
June 20 - September 7, 2014

The Arena di Verona, the ancient Roman amphitheater in Verona, opens its summer opera season with Un Ballo in Maschera. This popular summer opera festival brings a staggering 16,000 people to each production. The outdoor opera venue, the Arena, continues with Carmen, Aida, and others. 

Opera at the Baths of Caracalla
Rome, Italy
June 24 - August 9, 2014

Teatro dell'Opera holds its summer season of opera outdoors under the stars at the Baths of Caracalla, the ancient Roman spa complex in Rome. This year, the company presents ballet as well as operas.

Festival Puccini
Torre del Lago, Italy
July 25 - August 30, 2014

Torre del Lago is near the the Tuscan town of Viagreggio and 35 minutes from Lucca, the birthplace of Puccini. This year, the festival's open-air theater will feature productions of Madama Butterfly, La boheme, Turandot and Il Trittico.

Rossini Opera Festival 
Pesaro, Italy
August 10 - 22, 2014

Established in 1980, the festival at the birthplace of the Rossini features performances of his works. This year, Il Viaggio a Reims and other programs are scheduled.


International Festival of Lyric Art
Aix-en-Provence, France
May 31 - July 24, 2014

The festival in Aix-en-Provence presents opera, and concerts of orchestral, chamber, vocal and solo instrumental music.

Paris, France
July 10 - 26, 2014

This summer, the yearly festival presents the San Francisco Ballet at Théâtre du Châtelet. 

Chopin Festival
Paris, France
June 22 - July 14, 2014

Since the early 1980s, the Chopin Festival has celebrated the work of Frederic Chopin with performances at the Parc de Bagatelle featuring internationally renowned artists.


Holland Festival
June 1 - 29, 2014

The Holland Festival is The Netherland's oldest performing arts festival featuring theater, music, opera, modern dance as well as visual art and film. Performances take throughout Amsterdam at venues such as the city theatre, the opera, the Concertgebouw,  and Muziekgebouw concert halls and the Westergas factory.


BBC Proms
London, England
July 18 - September 13, 2014

The BBC Proms presents concerts at the Royal Albert Hall and chamber music recitals at Cadogan Hall. There are also a number of outdoor events. So named from the practice of the audience promenading, or strolling, in the concert hall during the performance, "prom" now refers to the areas of the hall where audience members stand. It's considered to be the best place in the house to be.

Glyndebourne Festival
May 17 - August 24, 2014

The festival presents six productions each year in a 1,200-seat opera house in East Sussex, England.


Wagner Bayreuth Festival 
Bayreuth, Germany
July 25 - August 28, 2014

Performances of operas by Richard Wagner are presented in the theater, Festspielhaus, built by the composer himself. 


Salzburg Festival
Salzburg, Austria
July 18 - September 24, 2014

The music festival in Mozart's city of Salzburg will present Don Giovanni, Il trovatore, and Der Rosenkavalier. In addition to opera, the festival offers plays as well as concerts by the Vienna Philharmonic, the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra Amsterdam, and others.


International Chopin Festival

August 15 - 31, 2014

Every year the festival gathers musicians from all over the world performing on contemporary and period instruments.
