Bonaire

Part of the Netherlands Antilles with Curaçao and Aruba, Bonaire is mostly a flat desert-like island, located outside the hurricane zone. Barely touched by development and its environment zealously protected, Bonaire is world renowned for its excellent scuba diving and is rated among the best diving and snorkeling locations in the world.

Though travelers come to Bonaire for the diving more than anything else, Bonaire is also a haven for birdwatchers, where flamingos along with about 200 other species of birds make their home.

Among accommodations, you'll find multiple dive schools with cabañas for a moderate price. Most other accommodations on the island are relatively small, boutique establishments, with 15 rooms or fewer.
